NCAA Women's Volleyball

The University of Iowa women's volleyball season opens on August 29th against Nichols State in the Hampton Inn/Bama Bash. The next day the women play Western Kentucky and Alabama. The team continues on the road playing the Pioneer Classic and the Iowa State tournament before hosting Portland in the Hawkeye/Holiday Inn challenge here in lovely Iowa City on September 19th. The women's team had an off year, finishing ranked 158th in RPI. Hope remains that this year will be much improved.

Continuing my review of NCAA Division I-A finances, let's look at Iowa, and the averages from the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, Pac 10, and SEC, along with the rest of the NCAA Division I-A schools.

As you can see below - among the five major conferences - the Hawkeyes are above average (less costly) in losses per student on the volleyball team than each conference except the ACC. Again Boston College in the ACC and The University of South Carolina in the SEC managed to exactly break-even. While I am not an accountant, it does seem strange that some schools repeatedly break-even.

School Number Revenue Expenses Loss Per Student
UI 15 $349,464 $954,649 -$605,185 -$40,346
ACC 14.75 $225,224 $748,198 -$522,974 -$36,275
Big 10 16 $314,902 $1,091,318 -$776,416 -$49,078
Big 12 16.09091 $373,656 $1,056,895 -$683,238 -$42,778
Pac 10 16.4 $228,796 $987,779 -$758,983 -$46,417
SEC 14.27273 $177,659 $917,656 -$739,997 -$51,131
Other Division I-A 15.21667 $251,561 $569,724 -$318,163 -$22,437

To give some perspective, I have included all of the NCAA Division I-A schools for the 2005-2006 academic year in the table below - ranked by Per Student Loss. As you can see, Florida, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan State and U of Miami were the five programs with the greatest losses in women's volleyball; while the University of Hawaii - Monoa had the greatest per student profit of over $20,000. I will have to find out what is going on out there in Hawaii!
