NCAA Women's Cross Country

The Hawkeye Invite took place this weekend with both the women's and mens teams in action. Last year the Iowa women's cross country team ranked #10 in the nation, so I am excited about the team's prospects for this upcoming season. The women finished first in the Hawkeye Invite this weekend with 24 points.

Given such excellent performance, I thought that I would turn my attention to the finances for the NCAA. The problem in doing this is the the data that I have is for all track and field, which is both outdoor (cross country) and indoor track and field. So I am unable to break out the two for the NCAA division I-A schools. Also, some schools do not have both outdoor and indoor track, so since I am looking at both in this blog, I will exclude any school that does not have both. Additionally, not all schools in each conference are either in Division I-A - so these schools have been eliminated.

Looking at the table below, we see that the women's track team makes a loss, but less than the average per student loss of the Big 10. Something that I also wanted to make note of is that the larger conferences, such as the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, Big East, Pac 10 and SEC all have greater per student losses than conferences such as Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt or the WAC. There are a lot of possible reasons for the differences in these average student losses among conferences, and without more detailed data, a definitive answer will have to wait.

Conf Number Revenues Expenses P/Loss Per Student
Iowa 94 $126,522 $761,468 -$634,946 -$6,755
