NCAA Athletic Graduation Rates

The NCAA has recently published graduation rates for the 1997-2000 cohort, so I naturally thought about how well student-athletes graduate from the University of Iowa during this time period. For those interested, you can check out the 1996-1999 UI cohort and the 1995-1998 UI cohorts. (I have not calculated the 1996-1999 UI cohort or the 1995-1998 UI cohort).

There are two measures of graduation rates. One is the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) and the other is the Graduation Success Rate (GSR). The Federal Graduation Rate counts those who are freshmen under Federal definitions and then adjusts for allowable exclusions - such as death, church missions or are in the military to come up with the who is counted. The Graduation Success Rate adds in students who did not follow the typical path of freshmen college entry - such as those who start in January or the Spring academic term instead of the Fall, two and four year transfers and non-scholarship athletes. I will be comparing the University of Iowa to the national average of Division I schools using the GSR.

For the University of Iowa, student-athletes do very well in graduating as opposed to the national average.

On the men's side, student-athletes in baseball, cross-country/track, football, swimming and wrestling have graduation success rates above the national average and basketball, golf, gymnastics and tennis are below average. Only men's basketball is less than 50% for either gender.

On the women's side, student-athletes in basketball, rowing, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball are all above the national average, with field hockey slightly below the national average (93% compared to the national averge of 94%). Additionally, none of the women's athletics programs at Iowa have a graduation success rate less than 50%, with cross country and track the lowest at 71%.

Here is the data in table form.
